When a Telegram link is not working, the cause almost always falls into one of four buckets: the link itself is broken or outdated, your account cannot join that particular chat, your device is not handing the link to the Telegram app, or your network is blocking Telegram. Figuring out which bucket you are in takes a minute, and the fix is usually simple.
Start with the quick diagnosis table below, then jump to the section that matches what you see.
Quick diagnosis by symptom
| What happens | Most likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Telegram says the link is invalid or expired | Revoked, expired or used-up invite link | Link problems |
| Telegram says the username does not exist | Username changed, removed or mistyped | Link problems |
| The group opens but you cannot join or see it | You were removed, or the chat is restricted | Account and access problems |
| Error about too many chats | Your account has hit the group and channel limit | Account and access problems |
| Link opens a web page instead of the app | Device or browser settings | Device problems |
| Nothing loads at all, or it spins forever | Network or regional block | Network problems |
Link problems
The invite link was revoked, expired or reached its limit
Private invite links (t.me/+...) are controlled by admins. They can revoke a link at any moment, set it to expire on a date, or limit how many people can use it. Once any of those happens, the link stops working for everyone who has not joined yet. Nothing on your side will fix this: ask whoever shared it for a fresh link. Admins can read Telegram invite links explained to see how each option behaves.
The username changed or the group is gone
Public links (t.me/username) depend on the username. If the admins renamed it, the old link breaks, and the old username may later be taken by an unrelated chat. Groups and channels can also be deleted, or removed by Telegram for violating its terms. Search the group's display name in Telegram, or check the organizer's website for the current link.
The link was copied incorrectly
- Truncated links: long invite links sometimes get cut off when shared in apps that shorten text. Compare the length with the original.
- Case matters in invite codes: usernames are not case-sensitive, but the random string in a private invite link is. If you typed it by hand, check each letter.
- Extra characters: a trailing period, bracket or emoji pasted along with the link can break it.
- Look-alike domains: if the address is not exactly
t.meortelegram.me, it is not a real Telegram link. Do not enter any codes on such a page.
Account and access problems
You were removed or banned from the group
If an admin removed and banned you, a working link will not let you back in. Only an admin can lift a ban. If you believe it was a mistake, contact them through another channel, such as the community's website.
You have joined too many groups and channels
Telegram limits how many groups and channels one account can be a member of at the same time. If you hit that cap, Telegram shows an error when you try to join something new. Leave chats you no longer read; our guide on how to leave a Telegram group or channel shows how to do it quickly.
Your account is temporarily limited
Accounts reported for spam can be restricted from certain actions for a while. Telegram's official @SpamBot account tells you whether your account currently has limits and what you can do about them.
The chat is restricted on your platform or in your region
Some channels and groups are unavailable in certain countries, or in app versions downloaded from certain app stores, because of local law or store rules. In that case Telegram shows a message saying the chat cannot be displayed. There is no setting that overrides this, and you should not try to work around legal restrictions.
Device problems
The link opens a browser page
Tapping a t.me link should open the app. If you land on a web page instead, use its button to open the chat in Telegram. If that keeps happening:
- On Android, open your phone settings, find Telegram in the app list, and enable it to open supported links by default.
- If the link is inside another app's built-in browser, choose the option to open it in your normal browser.
- Most reliable of all: copy the link, paste it into your Saved Messages chat in Telegram, and tap it there.

The app is outdated or not signed in
Older app versions may not understand newer link types. Update Telegram from your app store or the official website. Also make sure you are logged in on the device where you are tapping the link; a link opened on a computer without Telegram Desktop installed will only show a web page.
Network problems
If no chats load at all, the problem is not the link. Check whether other chats update. If nothing does:
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to rule out a local network block. Workplace, school and public Wi-Fi networks sometimes block messaging apps.
- Restart the app and your phone.
- In some countries Telegram is blocked or throttled by internet providers. Telegram's settings include proxy support for situations like this, but only use it where doing so is legal for you.
A fix order that works
- Paste the link into Saved Messages and tap it there.
- Read the exact error message Telegram shows.
- Check that other chats load, to rule out network issues.
- Update the app.
- Ask the person who shared it for a fresh link, or find the current link on the organizer's official page.
If a group is truly gone, look for an active alternative on the same topic. You can browse Telegram groups on Grupla by category and run the same checks on any link you find there.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a Telegram link work for my friend but not for me?
Your friend may already be a member, you may have been removed from that group, or the link may have reached its usage limit after they joined. Regional restrictions can also differ between people.
Can an old Telegram link start working again?
A revoked or expired private link does not come back. A public username link works again only if that username is reassigned to the same group.
Is a broken link a sign of a scam?
Not necessarily, since links break for ordinary reasons. But if a "Telegram link" takes you to a website asking for your phone number or login code, close it. Real Telegram links never ask for that.
