Telegram slow mode limits how often each member of a group can send a message. When an admin turns it on and picks an interval, every regular member who sends a message has to wait until that interval passes before sending another. Admins are not affected. It is one of the simplest ways to calm a chaotic group, stop flooding, and nudge people toward writing one thoughtful message instead of ten fragments.
This guide explains how slow mode works, how to switch it on, which interval to choose for different situations, and when it does more harm than good.
How slow mode works
- It applies per member. Each person has their own timer. If Alice posts, Alice waits; Bob can still post.
- It applies to the whole group. In groups with Topics enabled, the same interval covers all topics.
- Admins are exempt. Anyone with admin status can keep posting freely, which lets moderators answer questions and steer conversation.
- Members see a countdown. After sending, the message field shows how long until they can post again, so nobody is left guessing.
- It is off by default. Admins choose an interval when they need it, and can turn it off at any time.
At the time of writing, the available intervals range from 10 seconds up to 1 hour, with steps such as 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes and 15 minutes in between.
Turning slow mode on
- Open the group and tap its name to open the info page.
- Tap Edit, then Permissions.
- Find Slow Mode and choose an interval with the slider or list.
- Save. The change takes effect immediately.
You need admin rights that allow changing group permissions. If your group is still a small basic group, enabling slow mode upgrades it to a supergroup automatically. Slow mode sits alongside the other member restrictions covered in our Telegram group permissions guide.
Choosing the right interval
The best setting depends on the problem you are solving. Start short and increase only if needed; long intervals can quietly kill conversation.
| Situation | Suggested interval | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Members sending one sentence per message | 10 to 30 seconds | Encourages complete messages without slowing real chat |
| Busy general chat with hundreds online | 30 seconds to 1 minute | Keeps the stream readable |
| Spam waves or raids | 5 to 15 minutes, temporarily | Limits the damage while admins and bots clean up |
| Live event, launch or announcement | 1 to 5 minutes during the peak | Prevents a wall of "hello" and repeated questions |
| Heated argument | 5 minutes for a cooling-off period | Forces people to think before replying |
| Feedback or showcase group | 15 minutes to 1 hour | One considered post per person |
When slow mode helps
Large, fast-moving groups
Once a group has many people online at the same time, messages scroll past faster than anyone can read. Even a short interval reduces volume noticeably, because it removes rapid bursts from individual members.
During raids and spam waves
A spam account under slow mode can post only once per interval, which buys time for admins and anti-spam bots to remove it. It is a stopgap, not a fix. Pair it with restrictions on links and media for new members and a captcha bot. Our guide on how to stop spam in Telegram groups covers the full toolkit.
Temporary events
Slow mode works well as a switch you flip for an hour. Turn it on before a big announcement or a giveaway, pin a message explaining why, then turn it off when things calm down.
When slow mode hurts
- Support and troubleshooting groups. Helping someone often needs quick back-and-forth: "Which version?" "2.3." "Try this." Long intervals make that painful.
- Small, friendly groups. If ten people chat casually, slow mode feels like a punishment.
- Games and quizzes played in chat. Anything that depends on quick replies breaks.
- Groups that are already quiet. Adding friction to a group that struggles for activity makes it quieter still.
If only one or two members are flooding, deal with them individually instead: restrict their rights, mute them for a while, or talk to them privately. You do not need to slow down everyone for one person.
Slow mode compared with other flood controls
| Tool | Who it affects | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Slow mode | All regular members equally | Overall message volume |
| Member permissions | Everyone, or chosen members | Blocking specific content types such as links, media or stickers |
| Restricting one member | A single person | Individual flooders or troublemakers |
| Anti-spam and anti-flood bots | Accounts that match their rules | Automated detection while admins are offline |
In most groups these work best together: permissions block the worst content, bots catch automated accounts, and slow mode is reserved for genuinely busy moments.
Making slow mode work for your members
Members accept slow mode much more readily when they understand it.
- Announce it. A short pinned message such as "Slow mode is on during the launch so everyone gets seen" prevents frustration.
- Mention it in your rules. Explain that people should write one complete message rather than several short ones.
- Combine it with structure. In large groups, Topics separate subjects, so the slowed-down conversation in each thread stays focused.
- Review it regularly. If the group has calmed down, shorten the interval or switch it off.
- Give trusted helpers a way around it. Because admins are exempt, promoting a few reliable helpers to admin with limited rights lets them answer quickly without lifting slow mode for everyone.

Frequently asked questions
Does slow mode affect admins?
No. Admins can post as often as they like while slow mode is on. Only regular members are limited by the interval.
Is slow mode available in channels?
No. Channels only allow admins to post, so slow mode is not needed. It is available in groups, including a channel's linked discussion group, where it limits comments.
Can I set slow mode for just one member?
Slow mode applies to all regular members. To limit a single person, restrict that member's permissions or mute them for a set time instead.
