You can join a private Telegram group in only two ways: open a valid invite link, or have an admin or member add you directly. Private groups have no public username, so they never appear in Telegram search and there is no way to request access from inside the app without a link. If the group requires approval, you also have to wait for an admin to accept you.

That sounds restrictive, and it is meant to be. This guide covers each legitimate route in, what to do while you wait for approval, why a link might refuse to work, and how to avoid the people who claim they can "get you into" any private group.

Private invite links look like t.me/+ followed by a string of letters and numbers (older ones use t.me/joinchat/). When someone shares one with you:

  1. Tap the link on a phone or computer where you are logged in to Telegram.
  2. Telegram shows a preview with the group's name, photo, member count and often a few member avatars. You cannot read messages yet.
  3. Tap Join. You are in immediately.
  4. If the button says Request to Join, tap it to send a request to the admins.

If the link opens in a browser instead of the app, copy it into your Saved Messages chat and tap it there. Links inside Telegram always open in Telegram.

Route 2: Get added directly

An admin, or a member if the group's permissions allow it, can add you from their contacts. You will simply find the group in your chat list.

Whether this works depends on your privacy settings. Telegram lets you choose who can add you to groups and channels: everybody, only your contacts, or nobody, with exceptions. If your setting blocks the person, Telegram tells them and offers to send you an invite link in a private message instead, so you still get a choice. You can review this option in the Telegram privacy settings guide.

What happens when a group needs approval

Many private groups use join requests to keep out spam accounts and people who do not fit the community. After you tap Request to Join:

  • Your request goes to the admins, who see your name, profile photo, username and bio.
  • Some groups use a bot that sends you a private message with a question, a rules confirmation or a simple check. Answer it, because unanswered checks are a common reason requests are ignored.
  • When an admin approves you, Telegram notifies you and the group appears in your chat list.
  • If nothing happens for a long time, the admins may be busy, or your profile may have looked like a spam account.

How to improve your chances of approval

  • Use a real-looking display name and profile photo. Blank profiles with random names look like bots.
  • Add a short bio that relates to the group's topic, such as your profession or interest.
  • If the group lists an application form or contact person, use it.
  • Do not send repeated requests or message admins aggressively. Polite, single follow-ups work better.

Admins can learn how the other side of this works in our guide to Telegram join requests.

If you know a private group exists but nobody has sent you the link, try these legitimate approaches:

  • Check the organizer's official channels. Clubs, courses, companies and creators often post invite links on their website, in a public Telegram channel, or in a newsletter.
  • Ask a member. Someone already inside can forward the link or ask an admin for one.
  • Contact the admin. If the community has a public face, such as a channel or website, there is usually a contact method listed.
  • Look in a directory. Some directories list private groups through their invite links, with a description of who the group is for. You can browse Telegram groups on Grupla by category; check that a listing's link is still valid and that the group matches its description.

If a group is private and the admins do not want new members, respect that. There is no setting, trick or tool that lets you bypass an invite link.

After you join: what you can and cannot see

Private groups can choose whether new members see the earlier chat history. If history is hidden, you will only see messages sent after you joined, so do not assume the group is quiet just because your view starts empty. Our explainer on chat history for new members covers this setting.

Read the pinned message and the group description first. Private communities often have stricter rules about sharing content outside the group, forwarding messages or posting links.

Beware of paid "access" offers

Strangers who offer to sell you access to exclusive private groups, especially "VIP trading signals," leaked content or giveaway groups, are one of the most common scams on Telegram. Some legitimate creators do charge for their communities, but they do so openly through their own website or Telegram's official payment features, and they do not approach you in private messages. Nothing in such groups should be treated as financial advice, and no one can guarantee profits.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find a private Telegram group by searching its name?

No. Private groups are invisible to Telegram search. You need an invite link or someone who can add you.

Will the admins know if I open the link but do not join?

Opening the preview alone does not make you a member or notify the group. If the link requires approval and you send a request, the admins will see it.

Can I rejoin a private group after leaving it?

Yes, if you still have a valid invite link and the admins have not banned you. If the old link no longer works, ask for a new one.
